What is an Empanada?

A turnover of pastry filled with chopped meat, vegetables, fruit, etc. Usually baked or fried. The name comes from the Spanish verb empanar, meaning to wrap or coat in bread.

What’s the difference between empanadas and pies?

Empanadas are a South American gourmet pies.

Are they vegetarian?

Empanadas can be whatever you want them to be. If it’s in season, it can be in our empanadas. The Melbourne markets are abundant with winter vegetables, as with spring and summer; each season bringing its own individual character.

Are you a local producer?

Where better to be located than the food capital of Australia? As a Melbourne based small food business, we make everything by hand, from the mixing of the dough, the selection of locally grown ingredients to the grinding of the spices. We produce our empanadas as true local artisans.

What type of Empanadas you make?

Many types of Empanadas are made throughout Latin America; our speciality is Argentinian. Andrea co-founded El Alamo with his Argentinian friend who wanted a reminder of his heritage while in his new home in Melbourne. With a shared passion for cooking and good food, together they developed an authentic Argentinian empanada to share with their Australian friends.

Why El Alamo?

We chose El Alamo as our brand name for what it represented. An Alamo is a poplar tree. For travellers in dry and arid regions, as Northern Argentina, spotting an Alamo was a sign of relief as meant the vicinity of a creek; water, community and therefore food. As the philosophy of yesteryear, El Alamo symbolises a food community that shares food and experiences together.

When to eat Empanadas?

Whenever you’re hungry or perhaps wanting to impress an audience. Empanadas can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They can be served as an appetizer or snacks, but they can also easily make a full and satisfying meal by adding a simple salad. Empanadas are the perfect single-serve finger food for a starter or main at both stand up and sit down events such as Birthdays, Engagement, Weddings, Bucks and Hens events, Office lunches. Empanadas are ‘the little black dress’ of food.

Can I get them frozen?

Yes you can! We make all the work, you just need to cook them and impress your guest!

How can I cook them?

You can both bake or deep-fry. Fillings are pre-cooked and have to be re-heat.
